Challenges Addressed:

Product Protection & Preservation
Improving the Consumer Experience
Cost Containment

Background & Printpack Solution: Our goal is to be proactive in the development of a 100% synthetic cold seal product that meets all the critical attributes and performance requirements. Our objective is to provide our customers the option to use an all synthetic or a latex/synthetic blend with the same properties and seal performance.
Hershey has reported consumers’ complaint of cold seal coming off onto the Kit Kat 4-Finger product. This occurred when the fin seal is not perfectly lined up and the product comes in direct contact with the cold seal pattern. Due to the intimate contact between the cold seal and the Kit Kat finger(s), the cold seal can transfer onto the bar.
Printpack made the recommendation to use an all synthetic cold seal due to its improved adhesion to the substrate. As a result, the consumer’s complaint has been eliminated.

Benefits of 100% synthetic cold seal:

  • No protein allergy concern
  • More stable and consistent product
  • Increased cold seal adhesion
  • Less “legginess” of the cold seal typically attributed to natural rubber latex
  • Improved seal response at lower pressure

Result:
Today, Printpack offers commercial structures (single web and lamination – clear, white opaque and metalized) with latex-free cold seal. We have the confidence that the customer satisfaction will be increased due to the broader operating window and the benefits offered by the Assure ™ synthetic product.
