A Path to Sustainability: Our Roadmap to a Healthier Planet

Printpack recognizes the crucial role that business plays in minimizing the risk that climate change poses to the future of our planet. Printpack is committed to near-term science-based emissions reduction targets in line with SBTi Criteria and Recommendations. In addition, Printpack has committed to Net Zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Since 2016, Printpack has disclosed its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and environmental reduction goals to CDP. Starting in 2023, emissions from Printpack’s Scope 3 (upstream and downstream supply chain) will be calculated, reported, and tracked to provide awareness, hot spot identification, and ultimately, drive reduction.

Taking Action: Our Steps Towards Decarbonization

We have adopted strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of our direct operations and throughout our supply chain. Here are several key strategies that we have implemented to advance decarbonization:

Company-Wide Support

Driving emissions reduction requires associate education and action.  Dedicated teams and resources have been established to support Printpack’s ambitious emission reduction targets. As examples, the site energy steward and corporate footprint data teams drive projects and data analysis to implement carbon saving initiatives across the company’s operations. We are prioritizing our focus on energy and water efficiency and conservation in alignment with SBTi and a pathway to Net Zero by 2050.

Emission Reduction Efforts

We are prioritizing our focus on energy and water efficiency and conservation with the following efforts:

  • Efficient Electricity – compressed air, LED lighting, controls, and procedural conservation
  • Natural Gas – process efficiency, heat recovery
  • Water – chill plant maintenance, low flow appliances
  • Solvent – reclamation/recycling via distillation
  • Waste – manufacturing waste reduction task force

Process Optimization

Operation process improvements have been recognized in order to contribute towards net zero emissions. We have worked towards improving our electrification, and waste reduction to streamline processes in order to reduce waste.

We are designing for sustainability through our product development and innovation processes with considerations on modular and lightweight packaging for leading brands and to the overall health of the supply chain. Lastly, we are working towards identifying electrification opportunities and prioritizing waste reduction

Renewable Energy Portfolio

Printpack acknowledges that committing to a Net Zero pathway means transitioning to a clean energy future in tandem with efficiency and electrification efforts.

As of 2024, Printpack’s Mexico division is procuring 87% renewable energy for its operations. Moving forward, we will continue to increase renewable energy procurement and will be 100% by 2050.

Value Chain Collaboration

In line with the way we work, Printpack is collaborating with suppliers and customers to understand emission hotspots within the value chain. Partnering with our entire supply chain will drive reductions far beyond what we can do ourselves.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainable Packaging with Printpack Preserve™

How is Printpack involved in sustainability?

Sustainability is a big part of our business strategy. We focus on where we can have the biggest impact and have set high ambitions in those areas. It starts with our company Purpose—to preserve and enhance people’s lives—and continues with our customer’s sustainability initiatives. We know brands in all categories are being increasingly challenged to use packaging and processes that reduce emissions, minimize waste and consume fewer natural resources. We help brands do this by advancing our Purpose as it relates to sustainability through the four Ps: People, Plants, Products and Partnership. Printpack is committed through 2022 to achieving the following: Reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by 20% Improving recycling in all plants from 80% to 85% Reducing the energy intensity factor per ton production by 10% Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHGs) by 10% Reducing the intensity factor for hazardous waste generated by production by 10% Reducing the intensity factor for water usage by 15% Additionally, Printpack also participates in and sponsors active programs that help address waste issues in our local communities (i.e. Hefty Energy Bag program in Cobb County, GA).

What sustainability organizations are you affiliated with?

Printpack has partnered with several non-governmental organizations to broaden our expertise in sustainability practices and close the loop together. Sustainability is also a key theme in our customer education events. Some of the organizations we work with include: The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) How2Recyle® (H2R) More Recycling American Chemistry Council (ACC) The Plastics Industry Association Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Keep Cobb Beautiful Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) Ameripen Compost Manufacturing Alliance Ocean Plastics Leadership Network

How is sustainability with Printpack different?

At Printpack, we design packaging with the end in mind, because one good thing leads to another. That means minimizing our footprint at every stage in the packaging lifecycle with innovative ideas and solutions. We identify opportunities to improve packaging at the beginning of life, middle of life and into the next life.
